second law

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NIV)

6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Today this verse found its way to me and it really spoke to my heart. It is so specific about your children. We always say, jokingly, that there is no guidebook for children. I believe that the Bible really is. The last few months I have been more mindful of my children and their ever blossoming (beautiful, unique,) personalities. Anthony, my ever cautious, sensitive, compassionate boy. Irene, my tough, fun loving, daredevil little girl. So different from each other, so alike at the same time, each child as unique as a fingerprint but yet occupying the same hand. How do I raise these children? How do I not make a mistake? What happens when one method works on one child and not on another and you are fresh out of ideas? Yet, God doesn't make mistakes. He gave these little wonders to us. It stands to reason, that if we trust him, we can't possibly go wrong.

  1. Yes, it is such an incredible responsibility raising children. With all the decision making, challenges, joy and heartaches. Yet, the greatest task is to lovingly lead our children to Christ. You can be a thoughtful, loving parent, yet, if you focus on just the everyday, you may miss the higher calling to lead your children to Christ. So many Christians worry about their co-workers and friends, yet the greatest mission field is in the home. I recall hearing that one of our greatest evangelists of the twentieth century drew many to Christ, yet failed to bring his three sons to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. It is estimated that over 100 million people heard the preaching of Billy Sunday, yet with all the time he and his wife spent on the road, they did not have the opportunity to properly lay the foundation for their own sons. I do agree with you, parenting can be a scary and overwhelming job at times. I am thankful that we can have peace in the knowledge that God will be faithful to guide us, as the verse in Proverbs states: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thy own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Proverbs 3:5,6.

  3. Good thoughts! I always fear "screwing" up my little one. I don't want to repeat some mistakes, want to repeat some of the good things I've seen, and some days I succeed, some days I fail. But at least I am always aware, that says something, right? As long as we are praying, reading the Word, and listening to our hearts for Gods little instructions, thats the best we can do, and all that HE asks. So I totally agree with you!! LUV...
