how to succeed all over the place

Poor Anthony has the stomach flu. Let me tell you a little something about our Anthony.  He hates to vomit...he even banned me from saying the word, he hates it so much.  He gets it from me.  I haven't done any of...you know what since 2001.  Yes I am proud of that.  Irene took after Edgard and is the "anything to make you feel better" camp of thinking.   But back to Anthony....  Edgard and I thought we would give him some activated charcoal to help him along, considering he is literally willing himself not to upchuck. We had to break the pill open in water because he doesn't do the whole pill swallowing thing well either. He took one gulp and it grossed him out so much he vomi...well... let's just say it was a very successful venture.  He successed and successed.  He successed into the garbage and successed into the toilet.  Anthony is now clutching his gatorade to his chest as we wanders around the house humming. He feels ...

a long yarn

It's that time.. . again!   Christmas knitting time.  In fact, I am a little late in starting.  I have one husband, two kids, a mom and dad, two sisters, a niece and two friends to knit for... Ok now I am tired. Yikes.  I really have no idea what to make for all those people.  It would be easier to offend them and make them go away.   Don't worry... I'd say sorry January first.   Probably not a good idea. Oh well. At least I know what to do for my dad...I will just finish the scarf I started knitting for him last Christmas.  Won't he be surprised.... ....that I finished it.  In my defense it is 21,000 monotonous stitches.  It is a pattern from WWI. The kind of pattern you knitted and then sent to your men at the front.  It was part of that whole " knit your bit " campaign started in WWI and made popular in WWII.  The pattern calls for wool but I am doing superwash merino wool which means that there is no shrinky or ...

nine

Image
In honor of our ninth wedding anniversary, I am going to list 9 things that I love about my husband. I love his laugh and smile.  It is contagious.  To hear him laugh, you instantly have to start laughing too.   I love that we have the same twisted sense of humor. I love that we both feel the same way about what we want for our children I love he provides for me.  And that I can trust him in that. I love his strong work ethic and that he is respected for it by others, as well. I love, and am proud of his musical talent.  I love when he takes the kids out of the house to give me break and focuses solely on them the whole time---I love the memories that he is giving them. I love his culture and the goodness and richness that it brings to our life. I love when we met, how special he made me feel everyday---I love the memories that he gave me from that time. Feliz Aniversario

it's all in the perspective, my dear.

So what do you do on a Saturday, home alone with the kids, with nothing but a cellphone camera and some imagination? You take some pictures..... ...send them to your husband, and make him think that you plunked down his hard earned money on some unneeded and expensive new toy for the children. It is at this point, around the third frantic interrogation text message, that you can start laughing...and I don't mean your everyday laughter... this is where you can pull out the evil villainous laughter you have been practicing since 5th grade. Go ahead....you've earned it.

what do you think it is?

Apparently there is something about me that is so irresistible that women want to give me flowers. Thank you Michelle . On the other hand, there also seems to be something so re sistible about me, that no men seem to find the urge to bring me any. Hmmm... Must investigate this...

phlegmatically yours

Today is the big day for my x-ray. Of course, the hope is that the gray, cotton-candy looking substance, which unceremoniously invaded my lungs, has taken it's leave of me. Honestly, without going into too much detail, I really haven't been as "productive" as I think I should in getting rid of this gunk. I don't really know what is next, though. I took a strong three day antibiotic that stays in my system for ten days---I am only on my sixth day, so I suppose I should try to be patient for the remaining 4 days. It is just hard knowing that there is a foreign invader in my body. In the past I have taken kindly to foreign invaders...I ended up marrying the last one I came in contact with. Of course Edgard doesn't make me all phlegmy so that could be why he is still around. This current invader is a little less pleasant. Although, having pneumonia garners me more sympathy than being married to Edgard does---so I guess that is sort of a bonus. Other t...

pneumonia and me

Image
I have been trying to think of the good parts of pneumonia, and the only thing I could come up with was, that the best thing about pneumonia is not having it at all. Too late. One really nice thing that has come out of it was this beautiful and romantic bouquet. Thanks Mom. The other thing that is admittedly nice is guilt-free computer time. Who is going to guilt a sickly woman with a potentially fatal infection, right? Besides when would they ask me to give up my laptop...between the paroxysms of coughing or all the choking? This has been interesting, though. I have found that with a little help from my mom willpower and more help from Edgard some ingenuity, you can pretty much parent completely from the comfort of your soggy week old sheets. Just a note: the sheets in the picture are not the previously discussed week old soggy sheets but a brand new set that Edgard put on when I called him from the doctor's office to tell him of my pneumonia. Hey... I could add tha...

some little bug is going to find you sometime.

I was trying to figure out which part of my thrilling Dr.'s visit I should tell you about. Maybe the part where every time I had to use the elevator---6 times---I ended up being trapped in there with someone who smelled badly...really badly. And as if that weren't punishment enough, they always got off before I did and there I was... left in in this funky elevator looking highly embarrassed and very guilty. I obviously could have skipped the shower and no one would have been any the wiser. Then there was the part where I saw John Travolta's character from Love Song for Bobby Long in the waiting room. Well at about age 35 but he looked about as healthy as Bobby Long. Or there was the fun moment after being jabbed and x-rayed and the waiting.... all the flipping waiting... I was told that, after being in bed since Saturday, I was going to get the bonus of five more days of bed rest. Yipee! I truly hope the sarcasm hits you right between the eyes in that last exclama...

...we are all working parents...

Image
So I have really been thinking a lot about the whole working mother/stay at home mother "feud." Just lately I have taken a part time job as an administrative assistant. It is a two days a week job that is supposed to last through the summer. My mother babysits half the time and the teenage sister of my boss babysits the other. What has gotten me aggravated though, are all the well-intentioned people that are saying "oh, it is so good for you to get away from your children." I probably wouldn't get quite as annoyed if they were saying that it is good for me to get out into adult interaction... this is very true... ....but they always, without fail, say: "away from my children." I know I am a bit biased, but my kids are really great and I don't have any desire to get away from them . Whenever I need a break, my husband will stay with them or even takes them out so I can have the house to myself (where I usually indulge in wild house cle...

hot diggity blog

Image
Update Below The whole blogging phenomenon is quite fascinating and the reasons for having one is varied. I have met so many people and been invited into so many lives and in turn invited others in. I have learned much in the past year and still have immeasurably more to learn. On a side note, I did design the blog header and footer for a friend/blogger so by all means check it out Link update: http://browneyedgirl30.blogspot.com and be sure and leave her a comment telling her how lucky she is to have a friend like me....hee hee...oh man, I crack me up. When I asked why you all blogged---I got the answers that I think are pretty typical reasons for everyone yet each and every blog is as unique as a fingerprint. And by the way.... about my mom reading my blog. She only reads it when I ask "mom, did you read my blog?" Then she scrambles to get caught up. Even worse is my husband...he only reads because he fears retribution. My best friend reads it for entertainment...not the...

say what?!?

Edgard: Hi...so I am getting out of here. I'm on my way home. Me: okay...hey can you stop by the store and get tortillas? I would have picked them up but I thought we had some in the freezer....they must not have made it through the great freezer debacle of '07. * Edgard: Sure, I can get some corn torntillas. Me: What did you say? Edgard: Tor n tillas. Me: I thought so. Edgard: hee hee hee * The great Freezer Debacle of '07: in which Edgard, in a fit of organization, threw out everything that was good in the freezer and left all the bad stuff.

my turn

I am now aged and decrepit. Today I turn 30. I remember after my dad turned thirty, my mom would say that it was harder for him to get drumming jobs because he was too old. I am...now...too old to get drumming jobs. I don't play, but still...there is something that sucks about knowing you are too old to do something. In actuality I do know how young thirty is. It just will take some getting used to...this knowledge that I sound old to anyone still in their 20's. Young punks! My mom got me one of those booklets that showed me what was going on the year I was born. I don't know about you, but my birth year (1978) was a bit hazy to me. She all but ripped the booklet out of my hands and kept saying "oh yeah, do you remember that?" ...no mom, actually I don't remember that...I was to busy processing milk that year. What they really need for those booklets is to go by decades. I needed a do you remember the 80's ... That I remember all too pla...

So it is the husband's birthday today. I mean my husband, of course. He will be the ripe old age of 33. He acts a lot younger though...like at least 31. I have tried all my feminine wiles on him to try to get him to stay home from work on his birthday. He really wants to, but he has a really good work ethic. It must be his advanced age that makes him this mature. I have a bad work ethic. But I am very good at procrastination. For example, the fact that I don't have a gift for my husband yet. Maybe I can make him a homemade card. He always seems really excited when the kids make those for him. I should be able to get away with that too, right? Well whatever happens for his birthday I just want to say: Feliz Cumpleaños y gracias por compartir un año mas conmigo. ¡Te amo!

We have gotten some major things done on our list. For one thing, Edgard is nearly done with the fence. I am definitely a firm believer in the good fences make good neighbors. Especially when your neighbor has decided to completely redo his yard the year before but only got as far as cutting the sod off. The weeds, I kid you not, are as tall as my son. Not the nicest thing to look at. And then, when you add in that we have let our backyard go while concentrating on the front yard and the inside of the house...well it wasn't pretty to look at. So now putting a fence up, we will only see half a horrible yard...ours. Even that is starting to shape up. We bought 3 mature trees to plant in front of the fence so that when the leaves come out we cannot even see over. Are you starting to guess I am a hermit? I am. I like my privacy. The other big development is the muscles in my arms. I have personally rototilled a section of our yard where I plan to plant some mock...

So I bought my son a school desk. I found it during my incessant thrift store hopping. It isn't the most gorgeous piece of furniture, but at only $4.99 how could I pass it up. It is also a fully foldable, storable one. He already has a great desk in his room. But this way we don't necessarily have to be stuck in his room when we do the homeschooling thing. I am sure you are wondering why I don't just use the kitchen table....but why would I, when I could go out and get something that doesn't work quite as well and I get to pay money for it. Makes sense to me. When I brought it home, Edgard said "oh, hey...a poopy tray" Now, I know it is a bit rough around the edges but I can clean it up and slap some paint on it. But he said that he didn't say poopy tray at all, he claimed he said "pupitre." ...sure . I know his opinion of my junk store obsession. But, yet, when I Googled pupitre , as opposed to poopy tray ---it seems to ba...

it's gonna be a bright sunshiny day

For the first time, in a long time, the clouds part to reveal the sun. Reflecting its rays on my uplifted face, I exult in its velvety warmth. It has been gone too long. Yet in the few moments of brightness, I have already forgotten the gloomy, rainy day, feeling. I can do any thing. I don't know if there are cloudy days ahead, but today, it honestly doesn't matter. Tiny, beautiful, golden beams of hope, soaking into my starved self. ....and no... ....I am not speaking of the weather.

valentine's güey

While everyone else is more likely to be writing warm and fuzzy posts about Valentine's day, I decided to write something on a more practical side of love, from a woman's perspective. I will leave the warm and fuzzies to the people more suited to it. This is my advice, to men, when you are...gasp...arguing with your woman. She doesn't necessarily want to be agreed with, but rather, simply, to be understood. Especially refrain from acquiescing if you are doing it to bring about an end to the argument. If there is any way possible, though you may not agree with what she is saying, to put yourself in her place, and try to understand what she is feeling in that moment. It could be better for both of you. And then, do your level best to show her that it has made an impact in your brain. If you find that she is repeating something over and over again---then she does not feel either heard or understood. And please, especially, don't say: whatever you are craz...

odd world

Image
An odd world, to me, is a world where a bowl of baby carrots and unsweetened green tea is a treat. But it is an odd world, after all, and today, they are indeed a treat. I have been eating better now for two weeks and I am craving water!!!??!? and fruits and Veggies!!??!?! And ...I am even thinking about exercise on a regular basis. And sometimes I even do it too. Will wonders never cease? Will my big rear never shrink? Should I be in bed right now? Does Edgard snore? Will I ever shut up? No. Yes. Undoubtedly. What? Sorry I can't hear the question over the loud, thunderous rumbling, emanating from the bed. And in answer to the last question, I will pose another. Has hades succumbed to freezing temperatures as of yet?

snow bunny

My little snowboarder... Much like Bradley , at the age of (nearly) 33, he is in an advanced state of decay...so though he was able to make it through the day snowboarding, he was barely able to move the next morning.

baby don't go

Tomorrow Edgard is going skiing with a work buddy and his son. And yes, Mexicans ski. They also play tennis, own dogs other than chihuahuas, and take off their sombreros to shower. At least, all that goes for Edgard. I am, of course, worried about him but he promised me he "wouldn't run into a tree like that Sonny and Cher guy." Oh that is good, because I wasn't at all referring to the icy drive up there. I am glad that he is going, since he usually has to work every Saturday. This will be a nice break for him. On the weight loss front, I had a terrible relapse at Christmas and ended up gaining weight. What can I say? I love food and hate exercise. Not exactly a recipe for slimness. But I am back at it and I will start regularly updating you again, very soon. I am not exactly ready at this moment. But rest assured, I am doing well regaining (bad choice of words) ground in the fight against my lardishness. I gave up drinking Pepsi One---I think the as...
