pointless... for now

Image
I wanted to draw your attention to my navigational tabs below my header. I have added a new tab entitled reading list. If you click on it now, you will be taken to a page that says "this page coming soon" and then goes on to use an immature amount of exclamation points---so really this is just a page of little to no information. Why am I telling you? Because I was asked a very long time ago , by a couple of people to make a recommended reading list. And because I will be adding the information very soon...promise--either the next few hours, or at the latest tonight while all of the normal people sleep.

you know you missed it

Because I know how much you all must be lamenting the loss of book love weekend , I have decided to bring it back. Please, please...no tears. No amount of begging will talk me out of it...and you will just end up embarrassing us both. You will simply have to put up with it. So without further ado: This is my bedside table. This is where I do the bulk of my reading...well...not on my bedside table. I usually do my reading in bed right next to the table. It's a bit more comfortable that way. If you are a reader, then you know why every time I see a pile of books like this, I grin to myself like an insane bag lady . I wanted to address a request that I had in my comments from Rachel (who is heading up her own book club) over at Like a Star , as well as Ritamae at Ritaville Perspectives . They were wanting me to post a list of recommended books. I will defintely do that... as long as everyone understands that I am the oddest person alive in what I like to read....

Every time I finish a book, especially a good one, I have a sense of loss. As if I just realized I am homeless and I look around in a daze, saying to myself "now what?" Just thought I would share that. Yeah...I don't know why, either.

three men and the thames

When I was young, I frequently went to antiques shows with my parents. One particular year, they were sharing their booth with a friend, and fellow antiques dealer, Debbie. Normally I would have gone around to look at other dealers setting up their booths, but this time I chose to stay and check out what Debbie had brought to sell. I am very nosy. She had a number of books and, of course, that got my nerdish little heart a-fluttering immediately. She, to get rid of me out of the goodness of her heart, gave me a book to borrow, to pass the time. It was an old black book, very small, and a bit musty. It showed an original printing from 1899. I, personally, had never heard of it and it looked to me to be a very boring read. That has never deterred me....thank goodness. I started reading it and found, instead of some stuffy novel of the week, a very tongue in cheek account of three men who decide to take a little trip on the River Thames , for their health---as they are ailing...

abcDF

There is no way to really share with you the city that I love---and the city in which Edgard grew up. Unless, of course, I take you there personally. In that case, you will have to pay for everything. I am a cheapskate. Until that time, I will show you a book, for book love weekend, that will be infinitely cheaper. I present to you ABC DF: A graphic dictionary of Mexico City. Here is a little extra for you since I missed last book love weekend. This is a book put out by Mamacita Chilena . She has already proven her worth as a photographer ---I am sure that a book full of her pictures should be a pleasure to own. Here is the link if you are interested in buying it. http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/88623#

john dough and the cherub

Image
This picture of the---hm hm---plump woman, cracks me up. I, coincidentally, happen to cook a potato every day for lunch. This book, John Dough and the Cherub , is one of many, put out by L. Frank Baum . He is the writer, if you do not already know, of the Wizard of Oz . I am sure that I will be a wildly unpopular person---more so than usual---when people find out that I don't like the book, or the movie. Did I just hear a gasp? For me the book is spoiled because of the artist. I am sure that W. W. Denslow was very good in his own right, but to me, John R. Neill 's drawings, coupled with Baum's writing, in the subsequent 13 Oz books, are what conjures up Oz for me. Neill also illustrated the pictures above as well. I have read all of the Oz books---excepting the first---many times, as a young girl . In retrospect, I think that I can pinpoint most of my mental problems being due to that. Baum's words and Neill's drawings were quite odd and a little insan...

treasury of david

The Treasury of David by Charles Haddon Spurgeon "The Treasury of David is a superb literary achievement. Eric Hayden, pastor of the Metropolitan Tabernacle a century after Spurgeon's ministry began there, calls this work "Spurgeon's magnum opus." Spurgeon's wife said that if Spurgeon had never written any other work, this would have been a permanent literary memorial." Quoted from The Spurgeon Archive .

a pizza and week two

Last Monday (week 2): 191 Today:191 Loss for this week: 0 pound I will accept a no gain/no loss weigh-in. I had a bad weekend as my fitday account will show. I couldn't exercise on Saturday because I babysat 2 children from 12:00p.m.-9:00p.m. Although, four children total, for nine hours was exercise in itself. On Sunday, I bow my head in shame and admit that I could have exercised and ate well and simply did not. I plan to exercise everyday this week excepting possibly this Wednesday. Wednesday is Anthony's first day back to AWANA. We are all excited about that. This will be his fourth year. We hope that he can continue in it until he graduates from high school. The other days should be workable to fit in some exercise. But I will also challenge myself to include Wednesday in this, as well. I also have to give a huge congratulations to Groovybabe , who has reached and surpassed the 100 day mark on her way to changing her life. You should check her out if you ...

first official "book love" i'm a nerd weekend

Image
A Six-Cylinder Courtship by Edward Salisbury Field is a book that was written to be very trendy. The bad thing about being trendy is that trends go out quickly And then they are no longer fashionable, they are simply absurd. The good thing about trends is that after 100 years they go right past the absurd, right into quirky and quaint. (two Q words in one sentence...that is impressive) This story is about a man who falls in love-at-first sight with a well moneyed young lady who mistakes him for a chauffeur. The reason for this, is because he owns a car. In those days they were owned primarily by rich people, and she assumes that he is too young to be rich, so he must be a driver. Alas, he is rich but continues to pretend to be her driver until such a time as she will fall in love with him. Hilarity ensues . It is not a great literary contribution, but it is a sweet, innocent look at life in 1907. ---------------- Now playing: Robi Draco Rosa - Penélope via FoxyTunes

my dad's reaction

So my Dad is fairly new to reading my blog because I was too chicken to let him read it before. This is what he had to say about the previous post. Hi everybody, I love all the pictures. That's a cute story about the old couple. But who are those people in the pictures. Yep, I still think you're a natural writer. Some magazine or newspaper is going to pick you up and you will be rich. Behind a keyboard, getting writers cramp, blurry eyed, and rich. But you will be online and rich so you can buy me books. Did I mention, I like books? tee hee. It's really a cool blog Ra. Love, your Dad I think I just figured out where I got my writing style from. My parents also read the comments and were quite touched. Have an excellent weekend and don't forget that I will be posting a photo of another book.

So I thought that, for the weekend lull, I would introduce something that is near and dear to my heart. Books. More specifically---the beauty of books. Every weekend I will be sharing a picture of one of my books. I may tell you what the title is, who wrote it and maybe even what it is about. Then again, I may not deem a description necessary. Maybe the picture can stand alone. And yes...I have that many books. Outre-Mer a pilgrimage beyond the sea Henry Wadsworth Longfellow And please, by all means, let me know what you think about this idea....
